I've researched this problem directly. A chapter I co-authored on AI adoption in resource-constrained higher education (Murtaza, Wahid, Ali, Nouman, & Rustam, 2027, IGI Global Scientific Publishing) looked specifically at how institutions across Asia, Africa, and Latin America are adapting AI-based learning tools for exactly this reality. Why this is a real, documented problem — not just an inconvenience
Digital readiness in resource-constrained settings depends on both infrastructure and access, and in much of the world, students and educators rely on smartphones as their primary device — not a backup to a laptop. That single fact changes what "good" ed-tech design looks like. A tool built assuming a stable broadband connection and a large screen will quietly exclude a huge share of its potential users, no matter how good the underlying AI is.
This isn't a minor design detail — it's an equity issue. If two learners have identical English ability but only one of them can reliably load a tool, the one with better infrastructure ends up looking more capable purely because of access, not skill.
What actually helps: strategies backed by the research
1. Favor tools built for low-bandwidth use, not just "mobile-friendly" ones.
There's a real difference between an app that merely resizes for a small screen and one engineered for intermittent or slow connections — short load times, text-first interfaces, and features that degrade gracefully instead of failing outright when a connection drops mid-session.
2. Use offline-capable tools where you can.
Research on AI tutors and chatbots designed to run without a constant internet connection shows they can simulate real tutoring — explaining concepts, answering questions, adapting to your pace — even when you're offline. Projects like Kolibri (by Learning Equality) bundle offline-accessible educational content with progress tracking, specifically for regions where internet access is scarce. If a tool offers any offline or "download for later" mode, use it — it's not a lesser version of the experience, it's designed for exactly your situation.
3. Don't wait for perfect connectivity to start a session.
Short, low-data sessions beat long sessions you keep postponing because you're waiting for better Wi-Fi. A 10-minute vocabulary review on mobile data adds up over weeks in a way that an occasional 90-minute session on borrowed Wi-Fi doesn't.
4. Batch heavy tasks for when you do have good connectivity.
Save data-heavy activities — listening modules with audio, speaking practice with recording upload, video content — for moments when you have reliable Wi-Fi (a library, campus, café). Use low-data windows for text-based work: vocabulary, grammar review, reading passages, writing drafts.
5. Treat an older device as a real constraint, not a personal failing.
The research is explicit that offline and low-resource tools sometimes trade off model accuracy or real-time updates for accessibility. That's a reasonable trade-off, not a downgrade in your learning — the alternative isn't a "better" tool, it's no tool at all for a large share of learners.
What good platforms owe you
If you're evaluating any English-learning platform — this one included — a few things worth checking:
- Does core functionality work on a basic smartphone browser, without requiring a heavy app download?
- Is there a genuinely useful free tier, or does meaningful practice require payment from day one?
- Do text-based tools (writing, vocabulary, reading) work without needing large media downloads?
- Is there any offline or low-data mode for the parts you'll use most often?
None of these questions are about being a "lesser" user. They're about whether a platform was actually designed with the majority of the world's learners in mind, or only for the minority with fast, unlimited, always-on connections.
The bottom line
Limited internet or an older phone doesn't mean you're studying "the hard way." It means you need tools and habits that are built for real conditions rather than ideal ones — and the research increasingly agrees that closing this gap, not assuming everyone has the same access, is the actual work of making AI-assisted education fair.
