Complex Sentence Structures

Band 7 requires evidence of 'a variety of complex structures' with 'frequent error-free sentences'. You need to correctly use at least 3–4 complex grammar forms.

  • Relative clauses: 'The sector that experienced the greatest growth was technology'
  • Adverbial clauses: 'Although urban populations are rising, rural areas remain economically important'
  • Noun clauses: 'It is clear that renewable energy is becoming more affordable'

Conditionals for Task 2 Arguments

  • First conditional (real possibility): 'If governments invest in education, economic productivity will improve'
  • Second conditional (hypothetical): 'If companies were required to offset emissions, pollution levels would fall'
  • Third conditional (past hypothetical): 'If renewable energy had been prioritised earlier, fewer emissions would have occurred'
Example: If stricter regulations were imposed on fast-food companies, childhood obesity rates would almost certainly decline within a decade.
