IELTS Writing Task 2: Opinion Essays (Band 7+ Guide)
Opinion essays ("To what extent do you agree or disagree?") are the most common Task 2 type. This guide gives you a reliable structure and Band 7+ phrases.
Practice Opinion Essays →The 4-Paragraph Opinion Essay Structure
Use a consistent structure: Introduction (paraphrase + clear thesis), Body 1 (main reason for your opinion + example), Body 2 (second reason + example or concession), Conclusion (restate thesis + summary).
- Introduction: State your position clearly in the thesis — never be vague
- Body 1: Your strongest argument with a specific example
- Body 2: A second argument OR a partial concession ('Although X, I still believe...')
- Conclusion: Paraphrase your thesis — do not introduce new arguments
Thesis Statement Formulas
A clear thesis statement is worth multiple marks under 'Task Response'. The examiner must know your position after reading your introduction.
- Fully agree: 'I fully agree with this view because...'
- Fully disagree: 'I strongly disagree with this statement, as...'
- Partial agreement: 'While I agree to some extent, I believe...'
Example: While technology undoubtedly brings many benefits to education, I strongly believe that human teachers remain essential and cannot be replaced by machines.

Task Response: The Most Important Criterion

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I give my own opinion in an IELTS opinion essay?
Yes — always. The question asks 'To what extent do YOU agree or disagree?' Do not sit on the fence or discuss 'both sides equally' without stating your position.
How many words should I write for Task 2?
At least 250 words. Aim for 270–290. Going significantly over 300 words risks introducing errors and wasting time you need for Task 1.
Can I use 'I' in IELTS Writing?
Yes, in Task 2 you can and should use 'I' when giving your opinion: 'I believe', 'In my view', 'I would argue'.
