IELTS Speaking Part 2: Cue Card Strategies
Part 2 gives you 1 minute to prepare and 2 minutes to speak. Learn a universal structure that works for any cue card topic.
Practice Cue Cards →The 1-Minute Planning Strategy
Use your preparation minute wisely. Do not write full sentences — note 5–6 keywords that cover Who, What, When, Where, and Why/How you feel about it. This gives you a mental map to follow without sounding scripted.
- Who: a person, yourself, a celebrity, a historical figure
- What: the main object / event / experience
- When & Where: time and place add narrative detail
- Why memorable / how it affected you: your strongest material
Universal 2-Minute Structure
Introduction (10 sec) → Background/Context (30 sec) → Main story or description (60 sec) → Personal reflection / feelings (20 sec).
Example: I'd like to talk about a book that had a huge impact on me — '1984' by George Orwell. I first read it when I was 17, during a literature class. [Context] What struck me immediately was the vivid portrayal of a dystopian society... [Main] Looking back, this novel completely changed how I think about privacy and freedom. [Reflection]

Tips for Speaking the Full 2 Minutes
Many candidates run out of things to say at 1 minute 20 seconds. Use these strategies to extend naturally.
- Add sensory details: what you saw, heard, felt, smelled
- Compare to another experience: 'Unlike the last time I...'
- Speculate: 'I think the reason I remember this so vividly is...'
- Future reference: 'I'd love to experience something similar in the future'
