Describing Trends Over Time

Line graphs always show data across a time period. Your main task is to describe how values change — not just what they are at each point. Focus on direction, speed, and significant turning points.

  • Upward trend: rose, increased, grew, climbed, soared
  • Downward trend: fell, declined, dropped, decreased, plunged
  • No change: remained constant, stayed stable, levelled off
  • Ups and downs: fluctuated, varied, was volatile
Example: After peaking at 85% in 2005, internet usage gradually declined to 62% by 2010 before recovering steadily over the following decade.

Writing a Strong Overview for Line Graphs

The overview is the most important paragraph for band score. Identify the dominant trend across all lines and any crossover points where two lines change relative position.

  • Identify which category was highest / lowest overall
  • Note any crossover or convergence of two lines
  • Summarise the general direction (upward / downward / stable)

Handling Multiple Lines

Group lines by similar behaviour rather than describing each one separately. If three lines all rise, discuss them together before focusing on what makes each unique.

Example: Both coal and oil consumption increased sharply between 1990 and 2000, whereas renewable energy remained negligible throughout the same period.

Time Reference Language

Use varied time expressions to avoid repetition: 'between 2000 and 2010', 'over the decade', 'by 2020', 'from 1980 onwards', 'during the 1990s', 'in the following five years'.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I describe every data point on a line graph?

No — select key points: the start, end, peak, trough, and any significant turning points. Describing every data point wastes words and reduces coherence.

Can I use 'go up' and 'go down'?

These are acceptable but informal. For Band 7+, prefer 'increased' and 'decreased' and their synonyms.
