IELTS Writing Task 2: Advantages & Disadvantages Essays
These essays ask you to weigh the pros and cons of an issue. Balance is essential — one-sided responses lose Task Response marks.
Practice Task 2 Essays →Two Common Question Types
Type 1: 'Discuss the advantages AND disadvantages' — balanced response required. Type 2: 'Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?' — requires a clear position on which side is stronger.
- Type 1: Discuss each side equally; no personal opinion needed unless asked
- Type 2: Take a clear stance in your introduction and support it throughout
Vocabulary for Weighing Pros and Cons
Avoid repetitive use of 'advantage' and 'disadvantage'. Vary your noun phrases.
- Positives: benefit, merit, strength, positive aspect, upside
- Negatives: drawback, downside, limitation, concern, risk, pitfall
- Weighing: outweigh, offset, compensate for, negate, overshadow
Example: Although remote work offers greater flexibility, its drawbacks — particularly social isolation and reduced collaboration — arguably outweigh these benefits for most employees.

Conclusion for Type 2 Questions
Your conclusion must clearly state which side outweighs the other. Do not end with 'Both sides have merits' — this is non-committal and loses marks.
