The Most Valuable Question Types

Not all TOEFL Reading questions are worth the same. Prose Summary and Fill-in-a-Table questions are worth 2–3 points each. Prioritise understanding these question types in your practice.

  • Prose Summary (2 pts): Choose 3 main ideas from 6 options — eliminate supporting details
  • Fill-in-a-Table (3–4 pts): Categorise information from the passage accurately
  • Inference questions: The answer is implied, not stated directly
  • Vocabulary in context: The answer fits the sentence logically

Reading for Organisation, Not Just Content

TOEFL passages are well-organised academic texts. Each paragraph usually has one main point. Before answering questions, skim to identify: the thesis (Para 1), the main point of each subsequent paragraph, and the conclusion.

Vocabulary-in-Context Strategy

For vocabulary questions, substitute your answer back into the sentence. It must make logical sense AND fit the academic register. Do not choose a word just because it looks similar to the highlighted word.

Example: The passage says 'the findings were robust'. If the question asks what 'robust' means in context, 'strong' fits logically. 'Loud' looks different but sounds reasonable — always test it in the sentence.
