TOEFL Speaking Tasks 1 & 2: Independent Responses

Tasks 1 and 2 are independent — no reading or listening. You express your own opinion in 45 seconds after 15 seconds of preparation. Here is how to maximise your score.

Using Your 15 Seconds of Preparation

Write 3–4 words only: your position + two reasons. Do not write full sentences — you will not have time to read them back. A mental framework is more useful than scripted text.

  • Position: Prefer/Agree/Disagree
  • Reason 1: 1–2 keywords
  • Reason 2: 1–2 keywords
  • Example: 1 keyword reminder

The Point-Reason-Example-Point (PREP) Formula

Example: I prefer learning in a classroom setting rather than online. [Point] First, it provides immediate interaction with instructors and peers. [Reason] For example, when I struggled with calculus, my professor could identify my specific error and correct it in real time — something an online video cannot replicate. [Example] For these reasons, I strongly prefer the classroom environment. [Point repeated]

Delivery: Pacing and Fluency

Speak at a natural conversational pace — neither too fast nor too slow. Leave a 0.5-second pause between sentences for clarity. Do not rush to fill every second of the 45-second response; a clear 40-second answer scores higher than a rushed 45-second one.
