US University TOEFL Requirements

Most US universities require a TOEFL iBT total score of 80–100. Highly selective schools typically require 100+.

  • MIT, Harvard, Stanford: 100–110+ (check departmental minimums)
  • State universities (UCLA, UMich): typically 80–90
  • Community colleges: often 60–75
  • Some programs (MBA, Medical) may require 105+

UK & Canadian Requirements

  • UK universities: most accept IELTS or TOEFL; TOEFL iBT 88–100 typical for Russell Group
  • University of Toronto: 89–100 depending on program
  • University of British Columbia: 90–100
  • McGill University: 86–100

Sub-Score Requirements

Many universities require minimum sub-scores in individual sections, not just the total. Engineering programs often require Speaking 22+. Medical schools may require Writing 24+. Always check the specific program page.
